There is no reason not to follow your heart…

For the past few years, I’ve woken up, looked in the mirror and asked myself…

If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I’m about to do today?

And whenever the answer has been, no, for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life…

Because almost everything…

– All external expectations…

– All pride…

– All fear of embarrassment or failure…

These things just fall away in the face of death…

Leaving only what is TRULY important…

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose…

You are already naked…

So there is no reason not to follow your heart.

This short speech was made by Steve Jobs about one year after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer…

But it really resonated with me so I wanted to share it, because I think it really helps put things in perspective.

That NOTHING matters in the grand scheme of things when compared to dying.

Your successes and failures really do NOT matter.

My successes and failures really do NOT matter.

Whether you’re in a great spot in life, or you’re experiencing turmoil… it doesn’t matter.

Next week it will be somebody, or something else, and the good times, or the bad times, will be long forgotten.

So whether we succeeded or failed miserably really doesn’t matter, because we’re merely seconds in the clock that’s time.

During stressful times, negative and irrational thoughts will sneak in and consume you if you’re not careful.

This is when we need to refocus our thoughts on the big picture… that we are all going to die, so NOTHING good or bad in life will last when compared to eternity.

Remember that if you wake up and can turn on running water, flush a toilet, and put food in your mouth — you still have more than two thirds of the world. 

The next time you’re feeling an unusually high amount of worry, fear, or anxiety about something important…

– Don’t give up.

– You are strong.

– There’s a fighter inside of you.

– Don’t allow your doubts and fears to win this battle.

– Do your most feared things first everyday.

– One day at a time.

– Don’t worry about the past…

– Just do your best today.

– Every day.

– Keep on walking…

It’s a great reminder of what REALLY matters in life.
